Leadership fatigue: 5 ways to recover and recharge

Posted on 04/03/202310/07/2026 By Reedz

Leadership can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it can also be mentally and emotionally draining. As a leader, you have to make tough decisions, manage a team, and navigate complex situations. Over time, these responsibilities can take a toll on your mental and physical health, leading to what is commonly referred to as leadership fatigue.

Leadership fatigue is characterized by feelings of exhaustion, burnout, and a general sense of apathy towards one’s work. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including long hours, high stress, and a lack of work-life balance. The good news is that there are steps you can take to recharge and overcome leadership fatigue.

  1. Take time off. The first step to overcoming leadership fatigue is to take some time off. This can be a vacation or simply a few days away from work. During this time, make an effort to disconnect from work completely. Resist the temptation to check your emails or take work-related phone calls. Instead, focus on relaxing and recharging.
  2. Get enough sleep. Sleep is essential for recharging and restoring your energy levels. As a leader, it can be easy to sacrifice sleep in order to get more work done. However, this is counterproductive in the long run. Make an effort to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and establish a bedtime routine that helps you unwind and relax.
  3. Exercise. Exercise is another great way to recharge and overcome leadership fatigue. It releases endorphins, which can boost your mood and energy levels. Try to incorporate some form of exercise into your daily routine, whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a workout at the gym.
  4. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It can help reduce stress and increase overall well-being. Consider taking up meditation or other mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing exercises, to help you manage stress and recharge.
  5. Delegate. One of the primary causes of leadership fatigue is the feeling that you have to do everything yourself. However, this is not sustainable in the long run. Learn to delegate tasks to others on your team and trust them to get the job done. This will not only lighten your workload, but it will also help develop the skills and abilities of your team members.

Leadership fatigue is a common experience for many leaders. However, by taking steps to recharge and restore your energy levels, you can overcome it and continue to lead with purpose and passion. Remember to prioritize self-care and take time to rest and recharge. Your team and organization will benefit from having a well-rested and energized leader.
