MMN 2025 so far… Posted on 07/03/202508/03/2025 By Reedz The 2025 session, which began on February 26, has introduced several noteworthy changes that could impact our daily lives. Let’s break down some of the key highlights: Twice-Yearly LegCo Sessions In a move to enhance governance and ensure more robust discussions on national matters, His Majesty has approved increasing the frequency of LegCo sessions to twice a year, starting from 2025. This change aims to provide more structured and continuous deliberations on policies impacting the well-being of the people. Healthcare Benefits Extended to Stateless Permanent Residents A notable policy shift has been announced regarding healthcare services. Stateless permanent residents of Brunei, who previously paid higher fees for medical services, will now enjoy healthcare benefits similar to citizens. This includes access to free medication and reduced registration fees, ensuring equitable healthcare for all residents. Economic Diversification Efforts His Majesty highlighted the growth of Brunei’s downstream oil and gas sector, particularly the petrochemical industry. The establishment of facilities producing petroleum, methanol, and urea has significantly contributed to the nation’s GDP. The export of urea fertiliser to countries like Chile, Mozambique, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico positions Brunei as a budding hub for chemical and manufacturing industries. Public Transport System Overhaul The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunication (MTIC) is seeking qualified companies to revamp Brunei’s public transport system. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of public transportation, encouraging more residents to opt for these services and reducing traffic congestion. Flood Mitigation Measures In response to escalating flood risks exacerbated by climate change, the Ministry of Development has unveiled plans to construct a series of flood mitigation projects. With a budget of $25 million earmarked for these initiatives, the government aims to protect vulnerable areas and ensure the safety of its citizens. Housing Ownership Goals Brunei aims to raise the home ownership rate from 67% to 85% by 2035. The government is looking into providing affordable housing through public-private partnerships, ensuring that more citizens have access to quality housing. Food Security Initiatives A LegCo member highlighted the need for a comprehensive national framework on food security. Proposals include increasing subsidies to support farming and developing strategies to ensure sustainable agricultural practices, aiming to reduce dependence on food imports and enhance local production. Long-Term Pass for Foreigners The government has introduced a new policy to support long-term stays for foreign nationals with established ties to Brunei. This initiative aims to boost investment and attract a skilled workforce, contributing to the nation’s economic growth. Temburong Bridge Sporting Events The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has welcomed a proposal to stage international sporting events, such as marathons and cycling races, on the Temburong Bridge. This initiative aims to promote tourism and showcase Brunei’s infrastructure capabilities. These developments from the 21st LegCo session reflect Brunei’s commitment to progress and the well-being of its residents. Stay tuned for more updates as the nation continues on its path of growth and development.
