Three ways to overcome impostor syndrome Posted on 16/02/202318/02/2023 By Reedz Impostor syndrome is a phenomenon that affects many people, particularly those in high-pressure professions. It’s the feeling that you’re a fraud, that you don’t really deserve the success you’ve achieved, and that sooner or later, people will realize this and expose you for the impostor you are. It’s a debilitating condition that can prevent you from reaching your full potential. Here are three ways to overcome impostor syndrome. Recognize that it’s a common feeling The first step in overcoming impostor syndrome is to recognize that it’s a common feeling. Many high-achievers experience this feeling, and it’s not an indication that you’re not good enough. It’s a sign that you’re pushing yourself to new heights, and that’s something to be proud of. Share your feelings with others Impostor syndrome thrives in secrecy. If you keep your feelings bottled up, they’re more likely to fester and grow. Share your feelings with a trusted friend, colleague, or mentor. Chances are, they’ve experienced something similar, and they can help you put things in perspective. Talking about your feelings can help you see that you’re not alone and that there’s no shame in feeling this way. Focus on your achievements One of the hallmarks of impostor syndrome is that you focus on your failures and discount your successes. To overcome this, try to focus on your achievements. Make a list of your accomplishments, big and small, and review them regularly. Celebrate your successes and remind yourself that you’ve earned your place through hard work and dedication. In short, impostor syndrome can be a paralyzing feeling, but it’s not something you have to live with. Recognizing that it’s a common feeling, sharing your feelings with others, and focusing on your achievements are all steps you can take to overcome it. With time and effort, you can learn to believe in yourself and your abilities.
