A new chapter… Posted on 25/01/2011 By Reedz The last few days have marked a potentially new chapter in the anakbrunei project with the migration of the project website onto servers located in Brunei Darussalam, tanah ayer tercinta. Its really exciting because for the first time, my content is actually residing on a machine which I could theoretically touch if I wanted to, instead of being located thousands of miles on the other side of the globe. Maybe its just me, but I’m very attached to my content hahaha! I am currently testing out Telbru’s brand new soon-to-be-launched hosting service which now includes most of the features that are found on other hosting services around the world. Most notably is the addition of c-Panel, a life-saving application for non-techies like me who are totally intimidated by the unix prompt on a telnet screen. This is one of the primary reasons why I opted to host outside of Brunei before. But now that its available here, I’m coming home! cPanel is the industry leader for turning standalone servers into a fully automated point-and-click hosting platform. Tedious tasks are replaced by web interfaces and API-based calls. cPanel is designed with multiple levels of administration including admin, reseller, end user, and email-based interfaces. These multiple levels provide security, ease of use, and flexibility for everyone from the server administrator to the email account user. More about web-hosting: I have a Website. Now what? Building a website is an important first step in establishing an Internet presence. The next step is to install your site on a webserver connected to the Internet so users will see the site you’ve created. The most effective way to get your website online and performing properly is to work with a reputable Web Host Provider. What is a "Web Host" and why do I need one? "Web Hosting" refers to the process of delivering websites across the Internet from a computer server, usually called a webserver. A "Web Host Provider," like ServInt, manages the expertise, hardware and control panel software necessary for you, your IT Manager or web developer to deliver your website to Internet users with consistency and high-speed. Don’t have technical resources on staff? No worries. In many cases, the Web Host Provider can perform all these functions for you, and scale services and features to accommodate your growth needs. The equipment is housed in a Network Operations Center (NOC), also called a Data Center, which includes sophisticated environmental control and monitoring systems, fire-suppression capability, and the latest security systems to prevent unauthorized physical and electronic intrusion. Web Host Providers also maintain the webservers, adding new hardware and software as needed, monitoring the systems to ensure maximum uptime, installing security patches, and providing you with help and support. How does a Control Panel help with my site? The control panel is a graphical interface with icons that link to important features and tools necessary to run your website. Think about the instrument panel of your automobile and the insight it offers to the inner workings, functionality and performance of your vehicle. Could you drive from point A to point B without such an elaborate graphical interface. Yes, it just wouldn’t be as easy, as efficient and of course, it would require more mechanical knowledge on your part. The same is true for a website Control Panel, as shown here. To a Web Host Provider, web designer or system administrator, a control panel offers the same type of intuitive graphical interface. The control panel helps to easily configure and manage the features and operations of a server – and your website. These include user accounts, user services, upgrades and software. When connected to your server, they’re a great way to gain more control of your account and your site. Can I get by without a Control Panel? If you’re a system administrator or expert user, you may choose to work without a control panel and opt for operating on the command-line as shown here. But for the vast majority of us, a control panel is preferable because you’ll never have to learn command-line language or tedious shell-oriented tasks. Imagine the time and frustration that will save you, and your technical staff. cPanel Features Mail: One of the most important aspects of running a website is creating and managing your site’s email accounts. cPanel provides several easy-to-use features that can help.
