Raising Strawberries

Posted on 20/10/202620/10/2026 By Reedz

We have all heard the label by now. The strawberry generation: bright, polished, beautiful to look at, and bruised the moment anyone presses too hard. At family gatherings and in the office, the verdict is usually the same. They cannot take criticism, they quit too quickly, and they fall apart when the boss raises their voice.

I have four of them at home, and I want to say something that many parents of my generation may not enjoy hearing. Before we judge the strawberry, we should look at who grew it.

I did not set out to raise fragile children. I set out to give them what I thought I never had enough of: comfort, security, and a parent who would always be there. So when one of them comes to me with a problem, whether it is a difficult colleague, a disappointing result, or a friendship gone sour, something kicks in immediately. I want to fix it. I want to make the call, write the message, smooth the road. It feels like love. Most days I think it is.

But I have started to ask myself an uncomfortable question. Whose discomfort am I actually solving? Theirs, or mine?

Watching your child struggle is hard. Anyone who says otherwise has not done it. Yet every time I step in too quickly, I am quietly sending a message I never intended: I do not think you can handle this. Children hear that very clearly, even when we never say it out loud.

I have tried to draw a line for myself, and I am still learning to hold it. When one of my children brings me a problem, I now try to ask before I act. What do you think you should do? What is the worst that can realistically happen? What would you advise a friend in the same position? Sometimes the answers are wise. Sometimes they are not, and that is fine, because a small mistake made at twenty-three costs far less than a big one made at thirty-five with no practice behind it.

This does not mean leaving them alone. Independence is not abandonment. There is a difference between standing beside someone while they carry the weight and carrying it for them. I want to be the first kind of parent. I want my children to know the door is always open, but that walking through it does not mean I will take over.

I also want to be fair to the young people themselves. They face pressures we did not: constant comparison on social media, an uncertain job market, and expectations that move faster than anyone can keep up with. Calling them soft is easy. Resilience, though, is not something you are born with or without. It is built, the same way a muscle is, through repeated exposure to difficulty in manageable doses. If we remove every dose, we should not be surprised when the muscle never grows.

So perhaps the real conversation is not about strawberries at all. It is about us, the parents, learning to tolerate a little discomfort so that our children can learn to tolerate a lot more. That is the harder assignment, and I suspect many of us are failing it quietly, with the best of intentions.

I do not have this figured out. Four children means four different temperaments, and what works for one backfires on another. But I would rather have them bruise a little now, with me nearby, than discover how bruises feel when I am no longer around.

If you are a parent wrestling with the same instinct, I would like to hear how you manage it.
