Bandar Seri Begawan – A Group called the Brunei Beach Bums held a beach cleaning campaign yesterday in support of Earth Day. The beach picked this time was Meragang Beach.
About 100 people turned up to help and show their support in the clean up. According to Rozia Hj Adenan, a member of the Brunei Beach Bums, yesterday’s campaign was a real break though. She said the group are surprised and at the same time happy to see that a lot of people in Brunei are concerned with the cleanliness of the beaches here.
"It shows that people in Brunei do care," she said.
This is the third clean up the Brunei Beach Bums have organised with the first one being held two months ago. The group has plans to make this a monthly event and eventually cover all the beaches in Brunei, even the ones in KB.
After all the litter on the beach was picked, it was segregated as plastic bottles and aluminum cans for recycling. General waste was disposed appropriately.
Representatives from two banks, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and HSBC were seen participating in the cleaning campaign.
Visitors to the beach are advised to maintain the cleanliness of the environment and to throw their rubbish carefully and thoughtfully. Even if rubbish bins are not provided beach users can take it home with them and not simply leave it behind at the beach.
The Brunei Beach Bums and their efforts are supported by various companies and organisations including the Tourism Department under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and the Department of Parks and Recreation at Ministry of Development. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
